Why natural ingredients over synthetic

Nature has been the source of cosmetic ingredients for centuries. Historians have recorded evidence of the production of soap around 3000 BC in ancient Babylon. Humans have been employing plants to enhance their appearance long before that.

Through artisanal processes, we used what nature offered us for centuries—until World War I. Due to shortages, scientists started to innovate, causing the spread of synthetic ingredients. These were cheaper, faster, and in some cases more efficient. For obvious reasons, quality stepped down and cost-effectiveness became the norm.

To this day, these substances—such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Methylparaben, PEGs, BHT, etc.—are found in the formulations of all types of personal care products, from body wash to toothpaste. Generic substances used in everyday products without any concrete justification. Not only in conventional products with low prices, but also in so-called “premium products.” Supposedly targeting specific problems, according to their marketing.

Some companies allege that there has been a demonization of these substances with the intent to drive sales of alternatives. Even though that may be the case, there has never been a single marketing campaign advocating for the benefits of them. Instead, there is a lack of transparency regarding formulations in the market.

If you are using nourishing ingredients, why would you inform your consumers by using generic terms or trade names?

Anyhow, just saying chemicals are bad is not exactly helpful. It requires research to determine the dose that makes the poison—not just after one use, but cumulatively as well. And that research is currently ongoing.

We believe that, although not every chemical in cosmetics is harmful, it is a cautious practice to opt for products with naturally derived ingredients when possible. Natural does not necessarily mean superior. Moreover, we should educate ourselves to make informed decisions.

We encourage you to read the labels and ask questions. We seek to make our label comprehensible and transparent. Please, look at our formulation to view the full ingredient list and understand the reason behind every component in our products.

Research on the potential risks of particular personal care ingredients is increasing. Consequently, knowledge regarding the realm has been expanding.

Regulatory bodies worldwide are continually working to secure public health by banning and restricting substances. Notwithstanding the hard work, occasionally this ban may come after consumers have already used the products for a while. In addition, substances may be forbidden in one region while permitted in others, in line with the strictness of the regulator.

One of our principles is to ask the right questions. Hence, another reason why we chose to go for naturally derived ingredients is your feedback.

After doing some research, we found that consumers prefer natural for their perception that these are healthier and more sustainable.

Fortunately, consumers are more informed, and label reading is becoming more popular. Why we choose natural over synthetic is not a mystery: avoiding possible health risks while using, and ecological risks after use.

Because these substances can accumulate in the environment, disrupting ecosystems and harming wildlife. One example is the bleaching of corals caused by sunscreen ingredients—thus, damaging the place where we eat and drink from.
